Chosen Solution After a dive through the ifixit tear-downs, I now know that my iMac (21.5in late 2013 emc2638) currently has an unpopulated (12+16 or 8+18 pin?) pcie slot for the fusion drive. I am planning to upgrade this and some other parts, but don’t want to bother with the pcie slot if the only available parts are the recovered/refurbished apple ones. A simple fix for this problem at the time was pouring a little bit of isopropyl alcohol on the home button and pressing it multiple times. This dislodged the speck of dust or whatever stopped it from working.
