Hi, I have a Whirlpool side by side refrigerator model # WRS973CIDM that is almost 3 years old. About a month ago, I noticed the refrigerator side wasn’t as cold as it used to be, but thought it was bc the room was cold now due to weather. Last week, I pulled out the bins ( crispers) and found frost and ice over a vent & about 8inches up on the back wall. The crisper area seems cold, but the anything above that is reading 60°. Freezer is fine. Does anyone know what the problem might be? How much it might cost to get it fixed? Is this something I can do myself? Any help will be appreciated-
Hi @notime4junk , Your model is a dual evaporator type so check if the refrigerator dual evaporator thermsitor is OK and also if the refrigerator fan is operating. There is no defrost heater associated with the refrigerator evaporator unit as there is in the freezer compartment so the thermsitor controls the temperature in the compartment and it should never get that cold as to produce ice. Here’s the tech sheet for the refrigerator. It details how to get into the diagnostic test mode and to test the components see test #2 & #39. You will have to defrost the refrigerator to get rid of the ice but do not use a hair dryer on hot setting as it may damage the wall linings etc. use only on cool for short periods at a time and allow it time to melt naturally. No idea of the cost as it would depend on what’s wrong so basically the cost would be a service call to find out what’s wrong and then parts and labour charge to fix it
