Hello, so I have the blinking folder with question mark screen upon start up on my MacBook Pro 2010 like I’ve read many others have had before as well. when I try to turn it on while holding the options key, only a mouse appears, nothing else. I have read the hard drive cable has been an issue with many MacBook Pro 2010 models. When I took it to a shop today, I was told immediately it was a software problem once they saw the start up “? Folder” screen. When I asked if they could check the cable first to see if maybe that is causing it, they said no it’s not the cable it’s a software problem. i am living in a foreign country and this is all translated through a friend who speaks English perfectly. the only option they gave me was to leave it with them to wipe it clean and try to install new software - but I said no thank you for now (I wanted to do some more research first & because I have documents/pictures on there not backed up) Now I’m sure they know more than me and it could honestly be a software problem, but my question is.. can you be 100% certain without even looking at the hard drive cable inside the laptop?

No, they don’t know more than you do. Open it up and examine the cable right where it climbs the last step onto the optical drive and look for indentations. Replace with the 2012 cable. Meanwhile get a USB to SATA adapter, pull the drive and attach the adapter to your hard drive and attempt to boot. If it boots, you know it is the cable. Meanwhile keep coming back here for expert advice instead of this shop.
