Hi! I have an iphone xs max with face id not working. I bought it second hand with a already cracked screen. Here is what I know: face id fails to detect a face during the setup process. It a possibility that the front camera or the earpiece speaker/proximity sensor cable is damaged or been changed. They are paired to the motherboard and if one is not original face Id won’t work.
