My display is defective (white oval ring on screen) and right now, I just close the lid when booting up so the external display that’s connected (via a USB C dongle) activates and becomes the primary display. I open the lid and use the Macbook keyboard and my Bluetooth mouse to navigate after. If I don’t close the lid after boot up, the ext display won’t activate.I’m just wondering if this works on a clean install with e.g. a wired USB mouse connected to the dongle (instead of a Bluetooth input device cause that’s not set up yet).
The MacBook Pro’s will allow use with a closed lid using a keyboard and mouse, but the power button still needs to be pressed to turn the system on if you’ve powered down. I’m not sure if the MacBooks will work in the same way or not its worth a try just the same. With the new Bluetooth keyboard with TouchID I was wondering if it can be used with the older MacBook Pro’s Vs the 24” iMac where it was intro’ed. Sadly, I found this: Magic Keyboard with Touch ID for Mac models with Apple silicon - US English so you need a newer M series system to use it. That would have been a great way to get around needing access to the systems power button. Maybe its worth looking at replacing the display MacBook 12" Retina (Early 2015-2017) Display Assembly
