Hi, My phone fell out of my pocket yesterday while at the beach. It was in the water for maybe 20 seconds, probably not even that long. It had a case and screen protector on. I took it out and dried it in my shirt. It wasn’t really wet, but obviously some water got in my headphone jack, charging port and ring switch. I probably should have turned it off but didn’t. It worked perfectly fine except it was stuck on headphones mode, and I had NO sound without headphones. If I slid the ringer switch nothing happened. I ended up using a tooth pick to get salt out of the headphone jack. The sound started working against last night before I went to bed. I am able to now use my ringer switch and everything. However, I am worried about the possibility of corrosion. I have insurance through Verizon but I don’t know how it works and I don’t really want to send my phone off. Should I contact insurance and see what happens? Also, should I try using compressed air to blow the ports out? I’m sure there’s still some salt in the ports. Thanks! Update (03/12/2019) I called my insurance. The lady tried to tell me that salt would evaporate. I’m not kidding. Basically all I can do is turn in the phone when it stops working and pay $149 for a replacement.
Only the H2O part evaporates! The dissolved solids will stay and in the case of salt will ionically corrode the metals! You need to find someone who has the skills to properly clean your phone. Just like acids you need to dilute the salt down to smaller and smaller concentrations using distilled water. Then using 85% or better isopropyl alcohol wipe down the same areas to speed up the waters evaporation.
