my car is leaking gas from near the gas tank, right near the back right tire, there is a unit that spurts gas out as the car is running, is this the fuel pump?
jean, just checked your manual and it does NOT look like an external fuel pump.Number 26 on the attached diagram is the “Fuel delivery unit” You might want to check closer at your filler lines as well as your vent and your pressure valves. Let me know if you need the manual, it is very large and might be hard to download if you are not on any kind of fast connection. Good Luck
Wow lots of great info guys! Even though old answers! :) cheers
You have two fuel pumps. The main pump is located where you described it. Take a closer look at part nr. 22 its a fuel filter made of aloy. Mine was totaly corrodet under the clamp holding it.
How I can remove the automatic gear plastic cover in side the car ? in order to replace the green pulp indicate light. ( Volkswagen 1993 ) Thanks in advance
There is only one fuel pump in the 1999–2004 VW Golf, and it is in the fuel tank. The fuel pump and top of the fuel tank are accessible through a small hatch in the floor directly under the right side of the rear seat. The hatch is fastened with three screws to the floor. To get at it, remove the rear seat bottom. It’s pretty easy. There are two fuel lines connected to the tank: one is a high-pressure feed from the pump output, and the other is a return from the pressure regulator on the engine’s fuel rail. The likeliest place for a leak as you’ve described is on the high-pressure line between the pump output and the inlet of the fuel filter (item #22). The hose could be punctured, a connection fitting might be damaged, the filter might be clogged, etc. It’s advisable to replace the fuel filter if you’re under there to fix the leak anyway.
