I recently took apart my Surface pro 3 because my digitizer stopped working because of a small drop it had. I was looking online and couldn’t find a replacement digitizer/LCD screen combo for my version (v1.1). I was wondering if it would be possible to use other digitizer versions like a v.5 and if it would still work.
Okay, finally home and installed screen, screen installs great. Digitizer seems to be an incorrect driver/firmware issue. I will post images following this to explain the issue. it seems that with someone else who may have the know-how it could work. I don’t know much about hardware ID’s and how they work or may be able to be changed/edited My old digitizer connection.
Ebay or aliexpress, I too will be replacing my surface pro 3 screen.
Same Situation! Help would be nice!!!
I ordered the version 1.0 and I have a version 1.1. I am a repair shop in Texas. I will let you know if it works.
I’m wondering the same also. Seems there are versions 0.1 0.2 0.3 0.5 and 1 coming out of china. Is it a Scam or can firmware be flashed once installed?
Oi. I wish I could find this answer! I can’t get a straight answer from the people selling the replacement of .5,.3,.2,.1 as to why it wouldn’t work. I had him tell me the measurements and the details of the .5 and it should fit in the 1.1 but he just won’t sell me the .5 because mine was 1.1. He won’t say why…
In some cases it is quite obvious. With certain versions the connector that comes from the Itrigg chip to the MB. is not the right one. However some others seem to be right. Its hard to tell from a photo though. The bigest problem is that we deal with sales reps who sell without real product knowledge and their margins doubtfully allow for errors. For this reason they wont sell. One other concern I had was that the numbers on the itrigg chip dont completely match. I think this will be down to bios but is it the kind of firmware that we can update I am unsure and unfortunately Itrigg responded (after persuasion) in a very general and unhelpful (technically) way i.e “Call MS”.
So I got a rep that might have answered this.. " Lloyd: I got you, Shawn. Lloyd: Please try not to worry, we will have this raise this concern to our Management Team so that we can check if there is something we can do about it. For sure, they will definitely work on it. ‘‘‘Lloyd: As for the Ntrig versions. Lloyd: There is no need to worry about this actually, there should be no differences.’’’ Shawn: That is good to hear. My biggest fear would have been firmware. Hopefully this will either update as needed or be similar enough to work for either versions. Lloyd: We just highly recommend to have the latest version and this can be get through windows update.(smile)
So which version will you go for? Please keep us posted. Make sure you get a close up pic of Digi>MB connector I have seen some that are deff not the right ones.
Also looking for this part. Can anyone confirm that v0.5 will work as a replacement for v1.1?
I am Hoping also to get an answer for this. i have the v1.1 in my surface pro 3 and need a replacement digitizer that is compatible.
what is the status on everything? my surface pro 3 needs a 1.1 screen replacement as well.
I’m curious if anybody has been in ownership of a surface with anything but a version 1.1
I do not know if this will help but we had the same issue with the Asus TF700’s a few years back. The solution was a bio flash from the tablet with the correct firmware. The copy was flashed to the non-working TF700 with the incorrect digitizer #. After a few months and all of us doing this. Asus sent out a fix for the bio to see all 4 ves. of Digitizers. I would bet this is a vendor issue with microsoft and that a bio flash from a tablet with the correct Ver. Digitizer will fix the issue. Some one might have access to all 4 vers. of the bio’s and can give us the files? Just my idea!
Well done for going out and giving it a try. Out of curiosity. Have you a) done a firmware update (assuming it will allow you) b) Is it recognized by device manager?
mm strange. i was sure I had seen a firmware download on the Ntrig site before. However I can no longer..
Doesn’t seem to really show any special devices.. Not sure what it looks like before the damage. i bought one damaged to fix. Is it missing something? do you need a picture of some other spot?
Ok. So unless I am mistaken, it has found drives and installed correctly. All be it not functioning. Interesting! it would seem similar to discussed here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sourc… It would be interesting to see the results of the following 2 commands from within a live run (CD) of Ubuntu “sudo lsusb -v” “sudo dmesg | grep ntrig” from both a working and non working surface. interesting that the questionable advice (Shawn) came from MS rep.
Where has the post with all the photos of internals gone? that wasnt you was it “ryuaced "
I asked Ntrig how one could flash the chip. They said MS and service repairers have the tool (presumably software) to do so. I wonder what they would charge for the same.
Have either of you tried with Linux Ubuntu? If its IDs and they are mismatched which from the result of device manager is what it looks like it would be interesting to see hwo other drivers/ os handle. Obviously with just running the OS from CD or usb. “sudo lsusb -v” “sudo dmesg | grep ntrig” Should give details of device IDs that could then be compared to a 1.1
I have found a site that sells v1.1 LCD for the pro 3 however I’m skeptical about the images. There seems to be a hole instead of the windows button? I’ve seen this on quite a few sites, Here is the link: http://m.nbkit.com//Wholesale-laptop-Mic…
Shawn/ryuaced, Kristan have you been able to try and load ubuntu from a cd/usb to check the results for those queries?
Hi, :).. sorry just anxious to read the results. I would contact MS before thinking of returning it. Remember according to Ntrig MS and their service agents HAVE the firmware tool (presumably software) and can update the firmware. Given you were fed poor advice by MS rep, maybe you could speak to somebody a little more senior in the team and see if they can help. at least you have ‘some’ leverage. The exact responce from Ntrigg was: We understand your request, however, the installation process of the SW & FW on the DSP-4196 can only be done with dedicated tools. These tools are only available to Microsoft and their authorized distributers/repair labs. We regret not being able to assist more on this matter.
Can anyone confirm what happens when the wrong version is installed? I’m installing the ver 0.5 to a 1.0 and a 1.1 and after running windows update to install firmware update, I am able to achieve at least a sporadic touch response from the digitizer–almost like an incorrect ground cable/phantom touches similar to iPod touches I’ve fixed in the past. Which is your case for the Ntrig digitizer–sporadic response, or no response at all? BTW, I’m only attaching the screen to the tablet using plastic spring clamps instead of the 3M foam tape that’s used to glue the screen down–at least until I’m certain it’s not just a bad digitizer in the first place.
champagnecharly I bought a lot of 3 broken screen surface pro3s, hoping to just replace the digitizer and resell. They’re all still running the stock windows os. One was ver 1.0 One was ver 1.1 I bought a single 0.5 since they are so abundant on ali express. I plugged the new ver 0.5 screen/digitizer into each surface, let windows updates run, and after a few restarts, the screen came to life. I was hoping that windows would search for the correct firmware and I could just extract, but I haven’t gotten past the sporadic responses. After that I was going to try a different os but I wanted to verify other situations first.
Well at least you can get one up and running -assuming the ‘original’ screen was a V1) as the v1 screen is also widely available. From what I read other trials gave no response other than code 10 or 14. I personally haven’t tried as yet as am too busy with other things. Before looking at other OS unless it is to make a log of effect on firmware on device ids e.g from ubuntu dmesg, then I would go down the route of trialing drivers for other machines that use the chip. The firmware installed and the component ids must be set that way for a machine.. mustnt they?
I’d also look at the drivers & firmware from other hardware. I think we can safely asume
=2 sets of firmware installed on the Ntrig. Base firmware we can see on the chip as V1.1 v 1 +++
- The installed underlying firmware matches ‘a’ basic/user updatable firmware
- That the factory didnt put these in production for the !&&* of it. And as such there may be a windows device/ manufacturer that has the correct user installeable firmware/ drivers. Either for W7 or W8 or W8.1 To me trying ubuntu would be for investigative purposes only. I think it may be worth while trying to find other devices that use the Ntrigg duo sence. The list can easily be obtained by looking at the available drivers/firmware on the Ntrigg website. I would start with drivers for machines that were pre W8. I also found this list of drivers whilst looking for drivers for the Sony Vaio Duo 11 http://www.driversdownloader.com/drivers… Good luck.
I added a post previous to this with some ideas on procceeding prior to full install of Ubuntu. Unfortunately it was marked as spam. Basically i sugested trying to dl drivers for devices that existed pre W8. Also to look at firmware drivers for the Sony vaio Duo 11 I kept on doing a little research and came across: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surfa… Seems like code 10 and IRQ issues is a frequent occurence with the surface. Currys stating 5 returns on the same day in 1 local store!!
Hi for Lucas, can you confirme me the V0.5 digitizer can fix broken tablet V1.1 ? thanks
Sorry everyone, for some reason my post didn’t go through. I have installed ver.0.5 on each Surface pro 3 with original 1.0 screen Surface pro 3 with original 1.1 screen After installing the 0.5, you need to factory reset. The digitizer will not be responsive at first, so use a usb mouse. Run windows updates and check each time for firmware to be listed. Check optional updates and keep checking for more updates even if it says updates completed. If there’s no luck, factory reset again and repeat updates. I haven’t found any patterns thus far but I’ve got ver 0.5 to work on 1.0 and 1.1 surfaces.
Oh and one more thing. Be sure the supplier of the digitizer is credible and confirms it is a working replacement. The first 3 I bought were defective and thankfully I was able to return. Keep this in mind if you are running into trouble. Good luck!
I’ve bought about 5 v0.5 digitizers, only 1 worked normally but with “ghost touches”. I had about 4 surface pro 3s to repair and all used v1.1 digitizers. I’ve had no success with replacing the digitizers, although the cost that I paid for each LCD Digitizer combo had turned up to be close to the replacement cost microsoft charges! For most people you might be better off with paying microsoft because a dented case can make it troublesome to replace the LCD as well I suspect anything before v1 is basically preproduction, the people selling v0.5s had dug them out of a bin somewhere and started selling it for a buck.
how could i know what “vX.X” is mine i need to replace
Hi, I have try few reset and drivers with 0,5. screen and home button ok but touch no life at all. for microsoft support one of this model are the same. they told me that it can work with all version
i lost the cable has version touch screen, how could i know what “vX.X” is mine i need to replace, tks
If anyone is still after a V1.1, the eBay link below goes to where I bought mine. It turned up fairly quick and works absolutely fine. I had ghost touches and some touch wasn’t working at first but after I ran the sony calibration tool (also linked) everything is fine. I got a Pro 3 1631 for free with a broken screen and was determined to get it working so it’s a total result for me :-) I had the latest touch firmware installed prior to installation. It might work for other versions but if you have a V1.1 then this should sort it. Good luck! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281775551482?_… Software: http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/swu-downlo…
I dont suggest replacing the screen yourself, paying Microsoft would be cheaper; replacing with microsoft is about 300 USD
Hello, I noticed that there are a lot of v.1.1 on sale at this time, both digitizer glass and complete assembly. Will a v.1.1 will be compatible with previous models? e.g. 0.5 or 1.
http://www.etradesupply.com/microsoft-su… It says it is v1.1, but I am hesitant to order in case it doesn’t function with my Surface. My screen is still usable.
https://www.phonelcdwholesale.com/micros… it says A1631 V1.1 , hope it will help you.
I am just wondering it’s 2017 now…and the only sales now on ebay are all v1.1. Will they be compatible with v1.0 (broken original)?
I’m also wondering whether V1.1 is compatible with older versions. Still no one tried? I get asked very often to repair Surface Pro 3 with broken screen and I always refuse them, but perhaps needlessly?
Hello every body. i just received a surface pro3 with cracked screen but works perfectly as a laptop lol since touch screen does not work. i am thinking of replacing my lcd and have found a couple on aliexpress and ebay as a complete (lcd and digitizer) set. but the thing that i am getting confused about is the version. how do i know what version i will need with out having to open the surfacepro 3 ? and check the existing lcd installed? i have googled this and am unable to find any relevant info on how to find out what version i need .
The most common places this is found is IFIXT webiste: Surface Pro 3 Screen ALI EXPRESS: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/For-Micr… ALIBABA: https://www.alibaba.com/trade/search?fsb… and somtimes walmart: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Microsoft-Sur…
There are plenty of them available on eBay for about $150. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R4… Or even as low as $120 if you don’t mind waiting for delivery from China. Someone posted about having problems with ones from China but I afraid that even the ones from the U.S. were made in China. I’ve replace mine twice and both worked fine. Both times from physical drops and not part failure.
