I have a MacBook Pro 2017 15” with the Retina display it was working fine just a few days ago I was watching playoffs from my laptop via hdmi to usb c and then I go the next day to get on my computer the display don’t work only shows on my tv via hdmi I try the CRTL+ COMMAND R P I tried a bunch of commands but it don’t work. I went to a Apple authorized service provider around me they said would cost $746 for a new display. Do I need to get another display or is there a fix for this ?
Apple only posted an extended warranty program for the 13” models for display backlight issues (FlexGate) nothing for any of the 15” models which also have the issue. It is either coming (a bit delayed) or Apple does not see it as big an issue. To be clear, are you able to see the faint outline of your desktop on your display when you shine a flashlight resting on the glass at a sharp angle? If not then you have a logic board issue with the video switching logic on the main logic board. In which case replacing the display won’t fix this. The only other possibility is if your system got a bang along the clutch cover area so the display cables got damaged or the T-CON board its self died. Then the display would need to be replaced. But if that where the case using a HDMI to USB-C adapter would have no bearing here, other than bypassing the defect via the external monitor.
