Hi, I’ve got a mid 2014 13” MBPr, I’m having a backlight issue but if I safe boot it works perfectly, I’ve tried talking to apple but they won’t tell me what the issue is (I presume they don’t know) Wondering what everyone thinks it could be as like I said it’s fine in safe mode. Sometimes it works for about a day normally but then stops, I’ve opened it up and can’t see any signs of liquid damage. I wouldn’t have thought it would be the fuse as it works occasionally. Ive reinstalled OS X multiple times thinking it was a software issue, but to no avail. if I plug it into an external display it works fine. If I shine a light through the Apple logo on the back I can see that the screen is working, it’s just the backlight. When it’s working the light will occasionally turn off but if I close the lid and open it again that usually sorts it out. Any help would be appreciated cause at the moment I’m completely out of ideas. Cheers
First try running a good “Paid For” anti-virus program like Symantec Endpoint protection.
I know that Safe Mode disables accelerated graphics, which is the only connection I can think of regarding your symptoms. That being said, I have never had the experience where Safe Mode allowed backlight, while normal boot did not. All backlight issues that I’ve experienced were the result of hardware failure, not software, so my hunch is that there may be a hardware problem on the logic board level. I would recommend running the Apple diagnostic test (hold ‘D’ during power on). You may also want to inspect the condition of the display cable pins and the corresponding port on the logic board for any damage.
