A friend gave this to me to extract the data on it, but I couldn’t find a reliable way to do that with apple’s proprietary SSD, so I’m trying to fix it now. The targeted disk mode didn’t work, and I checked some voltages around the board but I didn’t see anything obviously wrong. I accidentally touched the CPU heat sink and it was burn-your-hand-hot, but I don’t know if that’s normal or not. Is there any way to fix this, or if not, get the data off the SSD? Thanks!

Sounds like the logic board has serious issues. You could replace the logic board and transfer the SSD to it. The other approach is to get the required OWC ENVOY PRO which will allow you to transfer the data over to a new MacBook and still be able to be used as a backup drive.
