If your system boots up cleanly from an external drive, you may need to replace the cable again as they tend to fail for different reasons! The first is the rough aluminum surface of the uppercase chaffs the cables coating. Which is why I always place a strip of electricians tape on the uppercase where the cable crosses Your Hard Drive Cable Is A Ticking Time Bomb But even if you did that, just in the process of putting in the replacement cable can damage it too! People mis-handle the cable! The key area is where the cable needs to bend around a corner. If I see a hard crease on the cable it comes out! These cables are thin foils in a sandwich so they can be easily fatigued buy bending a sharp bend. I use an old BIC ballpoint pen ink straw (empty) as a forming brake. I don’t want the arc of the bend to exceed this radius. I also don’t want to bend the cable at the drive connector either. Here’s the cable I use MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable and here’s the guide MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 Hard Drive Cable Replacement Even after replacing the drive you’ll want to reformat the drive and install a fresh copy of the OS. I strongly recommend sticking with Sierra on these older SATA drives systems, as HFS+ (Journaled file system) is just better for them Vs the newer APFS file system Apple introduced in High Sierra and newer. Don’t get me wrong I like APFS on PCIe drives systems! Its the limits of SATA that is the issue here. I also don’t recommend using cloning software! That often makes a mess! I gave up using these tools over 15 years now! I only use the Apple supplied Migration Assistant tool.
