Computer Won T Start Circle With Diagonal Line Comes On Macbook

When I turn on my computer the Apple logo comes on and then the wheel starts spinning. After about a minute the Apple logo is replaced by a circle with a diagonal line ( as in street signs do not enter). The wheel still spins. Can you help? Thank you.
