Chosen Solution
I installed a copy of windows xp recovery used by a Compaq Evo N100v that stopped working around 2007 onto this compaq presario Cq50-107nr. The computer will not connect via wifi because it might be missing a couple drivers for it and wont connect through ethernet. I need to activate windows and used the phone service option and the automated voice said the installation id was invalid. The xp running does not have any service packs. I understand i need drivers to get the wifi to work but do not understand why the ethernet will not connect when i plug it in.
I had this problem with two computers and the only solution that I found works is to just upgrade the operating system on the computer. I had to update to windows 7 in order for get to the network settings connect to the internet. I know that this is a late answer but hopefully it can help someone
