First of all. I have already purchased a new computer. I am looking for a way to use the working components of this old laptop to make an updated useable laptop. I have a “late 2008” Macbook Aluminum body. The screen is still working great. The trackpad and keyboard are working great. I need to replace the speakers and CD drive. A long time ago I put in a SSD which gave it several years of new life. But now it is just too old to run useful programs. In my naive mind I feel there should be a way to take out all the internal components and put in new hardware that will work with the current screen, keyboard, and trackpad. It breaks my heart to think that it will be useless and thrown out, I know that the “recycling programs” don’t actually effectively recycle all the valuable components. Are there any other hopeful souls out there that have found a way to frankenstein their old Macbooks back to life? Thanks
The word Completely implies different things to different people. This system is one of the more serviceable systems Apple has produced. And some elements can be upgraded like the RAM from 2GB to 8GB and the storage from the original 160 or 256GB HDD it has to a a much bigger HDD or even jump to a SSD (as long as the drive is able to run at the slower 3.0 Gb/s SATA II interface this series has. Many newer drives today are fixed speed 6.0 Gb/s SATA III which are to fast for this system. There are some auto sense drives which can run at the slower speed as they sense the systems port I/O and match it. As an example a Samsung 870 EVO SSD offers this ability as you can see in the spec sheets Interface line: SATA 6 Gb/s Interface, compatible with SATA 3 Gb/s & 1.5 interfaces Make sure what ever drive you get clearly states that it is able to run at the slower speed. The standard was written so slower drives would work in newer systems not the other way around. As far as altering most everything else, you can replace with like but not better. There is no commonality of the logic board or display assembly with todays systems if that is what you where thinking. Desktop systems are a different story! Laptops are very much custom.
